The Vantage GT3 will take over from the successful Aston Martin DBRS9 as the Gaydon-based marque’s customer-orientated racing machine. It features a modified version of the six-litre V12 that powers all of Aston Martin’s V12 road cars.

The car’s dry-sumped engine is expected to produce around 600bhp and 500lb ft of torque and will be mated to a semi-automatic Xtrac six-speed sequential paddleshift gearbox via a carbonfibre propshaft.

The new car has a shorter wheelbase and its engine mounted lower down than its DBRS9 predecessor to enhance handling and performance. The modular chassis is a light aluminium and composite structure, as featured in the manufacturer’s road cars, which helps Aston Martin achieve a target dry weight of 1250kg.

As the car will be aimed at privateer customer teams, Aston Martin has improved the drivability of the car and race-developed ABS and traction control systems which are fitted as standard.

The Vantage GT3 will be eligible for numerous events, including the FIA GT3 Championship, the Nürburgring-based VLN endurance series and the British GT Championship.

Testing of the car starts in October this year, during which the car will have to complete more than 6000 test miles. Deliveries are expected to start in early 2012.

Bentley ContinentalGTC

There are standard 20-inch wheels, with the option of 21s. Make no mistake, Bentley wants this to be viewed as a more overtly sporting convertible – and one that gets you noticed.

That message should be carried through into the driving experience. The new GTC is 70kg lighter than its predecessor, has a 40mm wider track, retuned steering for sharper responses and sportier suspension settings.

The all-wheel drive system now has a 40/60 split front to rear, changed from 50/50 in order to dial out some understeer and allow a degree of steering on the throttle should the mood take you.

Bentley ContinentalGTC

The 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 now produces 567bhp (up from 552bhp), while torque is up by 37lb ft to 516lb ft and is coupled to a new six-speed transmission – dubbed ‘Quickshift’ – which halves gearchange times to 200 milliseconds and allows double downshifts. The 0-60mph sprint takes 4.5sec, 0-100mph is dispatched in 10.9sec and the top speed is 195mph.

The interior, too, is completely reworked in line with the GT’s, and includes a much-needed, all-new touchscreen infotainment system. Thinner front seats also increase space in the rear. As ever, leather, metal and carpeted surfaces abound, and Bentley promises roof-up noise insulation so good that “you’ll believe you’re in the coupé”.

The event at Battersea Power Station will mark the first time the machines have been seen in the UK. The standard short-wheelbase model will be joined by two extended versions, the mia L and the mia box van.

All three vehicles are powered by an 18kW electric motor that gives a top speed of 68mph. A 12kWh battery pack comes as standard, giving a range of about 80 miles. The lithium iron phosphate batteries can be fully charged in five hours.

The cars were first displayed at the Geneva motor show in 2010, after which mia received 3000 orders. The Microbus went into production at mia’s factory in Cerizay, western France in June. The company plans to produce 4000 vehicles this year, but wants to increase it to 14,000 examples by the end of 2012.

Richard Deslandes, head of UK sales said: “The mia has been designed with cities such as London firmly in mind and we consider the UK as a priority market for us [alongside France and Germany].”

The mia has a central driving position with the passengers sitting at the back. The standard mia has three seats in total, while the extended mia L has four, the mia box van has a cargo capacity of 1500 litres instead of rear seats.

The mia will be priced from £22,000 after the government’s £5000 subsidy is factored in. All the variations will be exempt from London’s congestion charge. The car and battery also come with a three-year warranty.

The new five-seater is scheduled to hit the UK next April and has been thoroughly re-engineered for extra interior space, greater refinement, better economy and improved safety credentials.

Mercedes Benz B 200 CDI (W 246) 2011

A range of petrol engines at launch will be virtually all-new 1.6-litre turbocharged units, one making 121bhp and 147lb ft, and the other 154bhp and 184lb ft, with maximum torque in both available from just 1250rpm.

The family of turbodiesels at launch will have a capacity of 1.8 litres. It will initially come in 107bhp/189lb ft and 134bhp/221lb ft states of tune.

Power comes courtesy of a 208bhp 2.0-litre TFSI engine and a 45bhp electric motor powered by a lithium ion battery pack.

Audi A8

Combined, both units produce 242bhp, with 354lb ft of torque available between 1,500 and 4,200rpm, giving the luxury hybrid a 0-62mph of 7.7sec, with top speed achieved at 146mph.

The aluminium-bodied hybrid will return “in excess” of 44mpg according to Audi, with CO2 emissions of less than 148g/km. A maximum of 1.86 miles is achievable on electric power alone when driven at a constant 37mph.

Three driving modes are available – EV, which gives priority to electric drive, D, which “efficiently” controls both power sources and S for optimal acceleration.

The A8 hybrid also offers five operating states: with the TFSI engine alone, electric drive only or in hybrid mode; recuperation and boosting are also possible. Two displays show the driver all operating modes in detail.

Externally, the frugal new A8 features 18-inch or optional 19-inch ten-spoke alloys, Arctic Silver paint, hybrid badges and LED headlights. Inside, standard equipment includes three-zone automatic air conditioning and a Bose sound system.

Audi has given no indication on pricing as yet, but a 10 per cent premium over the entry-level car – the £56,295 3.0-litre TFSI quattro SE – should be expected at approximately £62,000.

Jeep Grand cherokee

But perhaps in time we’ll regard it as its equivalent of the Mk4 Ford Escort, a car so bad that it actually became a force for good, stinging the firm out of its complacency and into action. Ford’s next two cars were the Mondeo and Focus and it has never looked back.

We usually save this bit for the verdict, but there is something you should know now: the new Grand Cherokee is almost indescribably better than the old one. It has taken a seven-league-boot leap in the right direction. Here, the cheaper of just two models, both using the same 3.0-litre V6 diesel, lines up for scrutiny.

Whereas the old Grand Cherokee used a Jeep chassis and a Mercedes engine, this one has turned the concept on its head by borrowing the platform from the next Mercedes M-class and powering it by its own engine, or at least one produced for Fiat, the majority shareholder in Jeep’s parent, Chrysler.

It is tempting to park the credit for all the manifest improvements enjoyed by this Jeep at Mercedes’ door, but the fact is that it’s still perfectly possible to make a pig’s breakfast out of someone else’s perfectly good platform, as Volvo has demonstrated on and off for some years. Even so, the simple stat that this Grand Cherokee is – and this is not a misprint – 146 per cent more structurally rigid than the last gives some idea of how far up the engineering ladder Jeep has been able to climb. Why does this matter?

Without a stiff chassis, your suspension can’t work so the car will neither ride nor handle and your NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) will run out of control. A run around the block in the old Grand Cherokee would illustrate this point nicely.

The engine is interesting. Built by VM Motori and apparently developed by Fiat, it has not only exactly the same 2987cc capacity as Mercedes’ 3.0-litre V6 but precisely the same bore and stroke, too, so we’re guessing not too much re-engineering of the platform was needed to make it fit. But this apparently new and state-of-the-art engine has been hobbled by the need to run through a five-speed automatic transmission. Given that, its emissions and economy figures are even more impressive than is initially apparent.

Jeep has not followed its softer rivals in ditching the low-ratio transfer box, but height-adjustable air suspension – essential for anything more than the lightest of off-roading – doesn’t feature on the entry-level model. Manually locking differentials aren’t available, either. Nevertheless, different off-roading modes are selectable via a rotary ‘Selec-Terrain’ dial. And if you think that this sounds like Jeep is taking a leaf out of Land Rover’s ‘Terrain Response’ book, we do, too.

Mercedes SLK55 AMG revealed

The roadster has an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission that features three modes – sport, manual and ‘controlled efficiency’. It features AMG performance components including sports suspension with a Direct-Steer system that enhances handling and agility, Torque Vectoring Brakes that provide selective brake actuation at the rear wheel during cornering and a high-performance braking system.

An optional AMG Handling Package comprises sportier suspension with stiffer tuning, an AMG rear axle differential lock, two-piece brake discs at the front and a three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel finished in premium leather with Alcantara grip inserts.

The front apron of the roadster features large air inlets and AMG-specific LED daytime running lights, while the wide radiator grille is a nod to the SLS AMG sports car. The SLK55 AMG also boasts styling tweaks including light-alloy wheels, body styling with spoiler lip and two chrome-plated twin tailpipes at the rear.

Darkened clear-lens headlamps and darkened bicolor tail lamps come as standard exclusively on the top-of-the-range V8 model. Bi-Xenon headlights with Active Curve Illumination are also available as an optional extra.

The interior design of the SLK55 AMG is reminiscent of the SLS, with four jet-engine style air vents and the centre console finished in brushed aluminium. The car features an AMG Performance steering wheel plus sports seats with the Airscarf neck-level heating system.

The standard retractable hardtop opens and closes in less than 20 seconds. Two other roof variants are available, including one with the Magic Sky Control system, which has glass that can switch from light to dark at the press of a button.

Instead of a standard wind-stop, the car has a new Airguide system. It consists of pivoting transparent plastic wings which are attached to the back of the roll-over bars, meaning no installation or removal is required.

The third generation of the AMG roadster model will be on display at the Frankfurt motor show next month and will go on sale early next year.

New Volkswagen Up unveiled

Volkswagen will also manufacture the Up for the Indian market however it will be a four-door version and will be positioned below the Polo. Holding true to the look of the original concept, the production Up has a simple two-box silhouette. VW design boss Klaus Bischoff says the layout provides optimal space utilisation within a compact footprint, making the car highly suitable for city driving.

Among the more distinctive design flourishes is a large front bumper featuring a low-set, rectangular grille. This, together with round foglights and large, angular headlights, helps to give the Up a more expressive face than other recent new Volkswagens. The upright stance of the design points to a roomy cabin which will suit Indian families looking for a budget car. Pronounced wheel arch flares are aimed at emphasising the Up’s wide tracks, giving it a confident stance by small-car standards.

VW claims it has been able to provide the new car with class-leading levels of interior space through the use of a wheelbase that provides the Up with ultra-short overhangs. Along with seating for four adults, the Up also offers approximately 251 litres of luggage space, extending to 951 litres with the rear seats folded.

The 2007 Up concept used a rear-engined, rear-drive layout, which, according to Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn, provided the best possible packaging solution. But the production car has a more conventional transverse, front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive architecture, known as MQB.

Indian-market Up will get an all-new range of fuel-efficient petrol and diesel engines ranging from 1 to 1.2 litre. The biggest challenge for Volkswagen is to price this car competitively, we understand that the German manufacturer is targeting an aggressive Rs  3 lakh price point for the base version.

The Up will make its public-debut at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show and will be launched in India by 2013.

Cadillac Ciel 2011

At approximately 300mm longer than the Cadillac CTS saloon, the four-seat convertible concept is powered by a 3.6-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, mated to a hybrid system.

The concept’s long and low proportions “evoke the spirit of the classics”, while the pillarless rear-hinged doors reveal a sweeping view of the “dramatic interior”.

Other features include 22-inch alloys, striking vertical LED headlamps front and back, a large shield grille and chrome accents.

Inside, the Ciel gets a floating centre console, transparent gauges and a “power-assisted transmission shifter”.

The heated and cooled seats offer a drawer for sun cream, sun-glasses and towels as well as “aromatherapy that is controlled from the rear armrest”.

Pull-out blankets are also available for all three passengers and retract automatically.

Lotus-Evora

The Road Car Concept remains a one-off at present and Lotus is remaining tight-lipped on its production chances. Officially, Lotus describes it as not “merely a paint scheme or homage to a race car – this is a serious race car that makes for a very serious road car”.

Lotus CEO Dany Bahar has said previously the current range of Lotuses would be fully improved and updated, and a flagship Evora would be a logical product launch to bridge the gap between the current range and Lotus’s new five-strong range of sports cars.

The concept is powered by a race-developed 420bhp version of the standard Evora’s 3.5-litre Toyota engine. The V6 unit is mated to a sequential AMT racing gearbox.

It sports a series of muscular styling upgrades over the standard Evora, including a body kit with a more aggressive front-end and a large fixed rear wing. Lightweight forged alloy wheels with centre lock hubs wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tyres also feature.

Also displayed by Lotus is a Matte Black Final Edition of the Exige, a special limited to just 25 units and conceived to commemorate the end of 1.8-litre, four-cylinder-engined Exiges in North America.

Lotus-Evora

The Exige’s Toyota-sourced engine is no longer widely available due to its failure to meet European emissions regulations.

Each Matte Black Final Edition gets a power hike over the standard Exige to 257bhp, black Alcantara sports seats, an increase in standard equipment and sports seats.
